Sensemaking is integral to how One Project approaches our work as we explore partnerships and prototypes aimed at developing, co-creating, and supporting new governance and economic systems. The Head of Sensemaking & Research will serve as a key partner as we work to execute our long-term vision and strategic plan.
Are you passionate about alternative economic models and advanced democratic governance? Do you have an innate curiosity about the potential for aligning technology with human thriving? Are you excited by the pursuit of solutions to epic global challenges? This is a rare and unconventional opportunity to grow your expertise and nurture your passion, working with the support of the One Project team and external partners to envision and design the future of political economy.
The ideal candidate will bring expertise in applied research and be able to synthesize complex ideas and information from a variety of sources. They will partner with and guide the team in developing ways to translate theoretical knowledge into practice-driven application. Our team is growing, and the Head of Sensemaking & Research will build, shape, and lead an evolving and dynamic research function that will inform and guide every action we take.
Who We Are:
One Project is a non-profit initiative with a bold mission to address the root causes of global crises. We are guided by the belief that the dominant economic and political models are incapable of delivering a sustainable, desirable future. So we are partnering with communities around the world to design, implement, and scale new systems that are radically more equitable, ecological, and effective. We are committed to building the field and supporting the broad landscape of aligned projects. We don’t just believe that another world is possible. We are working in deep collaboration and with appropriate urgency to build it.
While our core team has rich experience in a range of disciplines — social entrepreneurship, software development, narrative development, participatory design, social change movements, and community partnerships — we are seeking to expand our capabilities by assembling an exceptional team of full-time staff as well as consultants and advisors from diverse disciplines across the globe.
We are looking for brilliant, original, and courageous thinkers and doers who share our conviction that the time is now to develop new social systems that leverage and cultivate the wisdom of humanity, fulfill the promise of democracy, and create a fairer, more abundant future.
What You’ll Do:
Design and build an organizational structure to enable distinctive research that incorporates a diverse and inclusive global perspective; recruit, manage, and lead collaborators in this work
Oversee and guide the development, synthesis, and internal socialization of a deep and comprehensive understanding of both the dominant economic system as well as the solution space surrounding political and economic collaboration
Equip the One Project team with the knowledge and ideas required to iterate on the design and explanation of equitable, ecological, and effective economic and governance alternatives
Gather and integrate diverse information sources, epistemologies, and cosmologies including but not limited to:
Indigenous communities, ecovillages, and alternative ways of being
Theorists, practitioners, and wisdom holders of many traditions
History of past and present alternative economics projects
Alternative futures from global visionaries and science fiction authors
Anthropologists, economists, game theorists, systems scientists, and others
Provide clear, actionable syntheses of the most relevant thinking on complex topics (in economics, political theory, systems, and philosophy)
Develop an appropriately structured knowledge-base for a variety of audiences in the One Project ecosystem, including internal team members (the Systems/Product team and others), external partners, and the public
Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders across disciplinary and geographic boundaries; translate One Project’s first-principles thinking to real-world examples that can be easily understood by communities
While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the following reflects the ideal candidate profile:
You may be the leader we’re looking for if:
You bring extensive experience in applied research methods with a transdisciplinary approach in both academic and non-academic settings
You are deeply interested in economic and governance systems, and you feel compelled to use your skills and knowledge to build a better world
You are open-minded and not committed to a singular political ideology
You’re a clear verbal and written communicator with the ability to translate complex topics to a variety of audiences
You possess excellent synthesis and organizational skills and have experience structuring complex material in accessible ways
You have conducted research with a variety of different individuals/communities with different socio-cultural backgrounds, and you have a strong understanding of how to build relationships with diverse groups of people
You have led and managed effective research teams comprised of a diverse cohort of disciplines
You thrive in early stage, growing organizations and are comfortable with ambiguity
